The UK's first MedTech strategy to establish the UK as a leader in the industry.
Establishing the UK as a leader in the MedTech industry and further its position as a global science superpower.
Medical technology, or 'MedTech', is essential to the UK's health and care system. It encompasses many products, from simple plasters to sophisticated robots that can perform complex surgeries. Medtech products are used in various settings, including hospitals, ambulances, and even homes, and play a crucial role in the entire care pathway, from prevention to treatment and management of health. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the significance of MedTech, with ventilators and rapid tests being critical in our response. The UK MedTech strategy, which has just been launched, aims to build on these experiences and to strengthen the future.
Effective use of MedTech will support recovery from the pandemic by reducing waiting lists and bottlenecks and improving patient care. Medtech can also help to address health disparities and improve the management of long-term conditions, enabling people to live healthier and more independent lives. In addition, MedTech innovations can support the NHS's net zero ambition by promoting more sustainable models of care and reducing waste. MedTech is essential to the financial sustainability of the UK's health and care system.
The UK MedTech industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy, representing over half of all life sciences employment and generating billions of pounds. According to the report, the NHS spends £10bn per year on MedTech; the industry is responsible for 4,190 jobs in the UK, and export revenues are £5bn+. The UK is known for its scientific research and development capabilities and is a global player in healthcare. The UK MedTech strategy aims to improve the industry's market position by encouraging innovation, shaping regulations, leading research and development, and maintaining a strong international presence.
The strategy has identified gaps and opportunities and will focus on four key areas:
1. Resilience and Continuity of Supply
The supply of MedTech must be guaranteed, as it directly affects the provision of ongoing care to patients. Medtech supply chains depend on multiple nations and are vulnerable to disruptions caused by global events and actions of nation-states. The capacity of these supply chains to respond to shocks is limited, and when there are shortages, it is often challenging to find compatible alternatives. Stockpiles are relied upon to ensure continuity of supply, but there is a need to proactively address resilience and pre-emptively plan for risks to the current system.
2. Innovative and Dynamic Markets.
Innovative MedTech offers the potential to improve patient outcomes and deliver value for money, but it is sometimes unclear what the health and social care system wants and needs. High levels of unwarranted variation in product use across the NHS and barriers to switching between products further complicate the situation.
3. Enabling Infrastructure.
To deliver the ambitions in the MedTech sector, a framework is needed to support the work. A lack of precise data and metrics and unclear mechanisms for engagement can limit the opportunities for positive change and collaboration across government, industry, and the more comprehensive health and care system. Improving these areas will lift barriers to delivering patient outcomes and allow well-informed decisions to be made across the sector.
4. Specific Market Focuses.
Medtech is exceptionally diverse, and any approach must recognise the sector's complexity. Although there are many similarities across MedTech, many issues and challenges are specific to particular types of technology, clinical specialities, patient populations, and place of use.
It will be necessary to focus on and tackle these specific problems and work towards an overall vision.
Work closely with industry, stakeholders, and other relevant departments to deliver the strategy and align priorities with the broader objectives of the NHS
Cross-industry working group that will identify and implement the most promising opportunities for innovation in MedTech
Encourage collaboration between the NHS, academia, and industry to foster a vibrant MedTech ecosystem that can help drive innovation and create jobs
Provide support for the development and commercialisation of new MedTech products and services, and help to create a culture that supports innovation and creativity in the sector
Develop and implement a set of metrics that will help to track the success of the strategy and provide regular reports on progress to the sector, stakeholders, and the wider public
This inaugural UK MedTech strategy addresses the sector's challenges and provides a clear vision for the future. This document sets the direction of travel for MedTech and provides a roadmap for delivering high-quality care, patient safety, and excellent patient outcomes.
Investing in new MedTech products and services, patients will have access to better treatments, care, and support
MedTech has the potential to transform the delivery of health and social care services, making them more efficient, effective, and affordable
Supporting the development of new MedTech products and services, the UK will create jobs and stimulate economic growth
Fostering a vibrant MedTech ecosystem, the UK will be well-positioned to compete in the global marketplace
The strategy will encourage collaboration between the NHS, academia, and industry, promoting innovation and helping to drive positive change in the sector.
Through close collaboration between health and care system partners, academic and industry partners, and patients, we will continue to build a more robust and sustainable MedTech sector that delivers real benefits for all. The UK is well placed to lead the way in MedTech innovation. We must continue to support and encourage this vital industry to benefit our health and care system and the broader economy.
Implementing this strategy is a vital part of the UK's commitment to improving the health and well-being of its citizens, supporting the growth of a vibrant and competitive economy, establishing the UK as a leader in the MedTech industry, and furthering its position as a global science superpower.
We welcome the UK MedTech strategy and its focus on strengthening the future of the UK's health and care system through the effective use of medical technology. We hope you found this summary useful.
