Google expands generative AI model Med-PaLM to more health customers.
Google Cloud clients, including health systems HCA and Mayo Clinic, have been testing the large language model since April in a variety of use cases.
Google's foray into healthcare has been nothing short of audacious, and its latest venture, Med-PaLM 2, is a testament to that audacity. Designed as a large language model specifically trained on medical information, Med-PaLM 2 aims to revolutionise the healthcare and life sciences industry. But as with any technological leap, it's crucial to ask: Is this a step forward or a precarious jump into the unknown?
The Med-PaLM 2 AI system has been under rigorous testing since April by a select group of Google Cloud customers, including healthcare giants like HCA Healthcare and Mayo Clinic. The AI system has shown promise in various applications, from assisting doctors and nurses with documentation to augmenting existing workflows. Google's Health AI lead, Greg Corrado, has expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that the AI is not meant to replace medical professionals but to work as an extension of the care team.
Med-PaLM was the first AI system to pass U.S. medical licensing exam-style questions. Its second iteration, Med-PaLM 2, even outperformed its predecessor by 19%, achieving an 86.5% accuracy rate. These statistics are promising, but they also raise questions about the AI's limitations and the ethical considerations surrounding its use.
One of the most glaring issues is the potential for errors. While AI can augment healthcare practices, it's not infallible. The complexity of medical queries and the lack of regulation in the AI healthcare sector make this a significant concern. Med-PaLM 2 is already being piloted in real-world settings, but the absence of a regulatory framework could lead to unforeseen complications.

The technology needs to earn the trust of medical professionals before it can be fully integrated into healthcare systems.
